Discipline Scope: Economics

1. Education Goals

This major cultivates students' comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor skills, in order to meet the needs of social and economic development. They acquire solid expertise in risk management and insurance as well as a strong foundation in professional English, enabling them to possess excellent cross-cultural communication skills and work in various financial institutions such as insurance, banking, securities, trusts, investments, as well as in the risk management departments of large enterprises and financial regulatory bodies. They are highly qualified and innovative finance professionals with an international perspective.

After five years of professional practice upon graduation, students are capable of adapting to social and economic development as well as technological advancement through proactive learning, self-study, and lifelong learning. They can effectively adapt to independent and teamwork environments, continually improving their problem-solving abilities and levels of competence. Outstanding individuals have the potential to grow into key business backbone or middle-level management personnel in their workplaces.

The expected goals upon graduation from this major are as follows:

Goal 1: Cultivate students with good moral character, physical and mental fitness, and a noble understanding of humanities, fostering a strong sense of responsibility towards society and their careers.

Goal 2: Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the professional knowledge in the field of risk management and insurance, including awareness of current developments and trends, and develop the ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems.

Goal 3: Enable the majority of students to obtain international qualifications in the field of risk management and financial insurance, such as Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate (CII), etc., thereby becoming international professionals in risk management and financial insurance.

Goal 4: Develop an international perspective, solid insurance-specific English foundation, and cross-cultural communication abilities, enabling students to be competent in international insurance and financial institutions.

Goal 5: Equip students with the skills and knowledge to become key professionals in government agencies (including the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission), insurance companies, insurance intermediaries, banks, and other financial institutions, and eventually progress to senior management positions in companies..

3 Academic System and Conferment of Degree

The academic program is four years in duration, implementing a credit-based system with flexible study timelines. Students can graduate within 3-6 years upon completing the required credits. The minimum total credits required for graduation is 173, including course credits and practice education credits. Upon fulfilling the graduation requirements, students will be issued a graduation certificate. Among the students who meet the criteria for a Bachelor’s degree according to the national degree regulations, the degree conferred is a Bachelor of Economics.

4 Graduation Requirements

4.1 Basic Quality

1 Adhere to the Constitution, laws, and regulations, abide by civic moral standards, comply with the "Code of Conduct for Higher Education Students," adhere to the school's management system, and possess good moral character and civilized habits. Advocate socialist core values, foster a sense of integrity, honor commitments, integrate knowledge and practice, cultivate strong professional ethics and moral conduct, and demonstrate a sense of social responsibility and humanistic concern.

2 Physical and mental fitness. Have a healthy physique and meet physical education standards. Possess good psychological qualities and strong self-control and self-regulation abilities

3 Scientific and cultural literacy. Possess a certain level of scientific knowledge and scientific literacy; have a certain level of literary and artistic literacy and appreciation skills; demonstrate a certain understanding of traditional culture and history.

4 Professional qualities. Possess a good professional competence; be familiar with relevant policies, guidelines, and laws and regulations of the national finance and insurance sector; have an understanding of domestic and international developments in finance and insurance.

4.2 Knowledge Requirements

(1) Fundamental knowledge. Familiarize oneself with the basic knowledge in disciplines such as economics, finance, management, and information technology to establish a foundation for studying professional courses.

(2) Tools and techniques. Proficiently use computers; skillfully utilize modern information management technologies for professional literature retrieval, data processing, model design, etc.; proficiently use professional databases for writing professional papers and research reports.

(3) Professional knowledge. Possess a solid grasp of the fundamental knowledge, basic theories, and skills in risk management and insurance. This includes a systematic mastery of theoretical knowledge and analytical methods in the field of risk management and insurance, as well as basic quantitative analysis and computer application abilities. Additionally, it requires a thorough understanding of various insurance and financial institution operations and management, macro-regulatory policies of the insurance industry, cutting-edge theories, and practical developments in risk management and insurance. It also necessitates the ability to solve practical problems in the field of risk management and insurance and exhibit basic problem-solving and innovative capabilities.

(4) Innovation, entrepreneurship, and career development knowledge. Understand relevant knowledge related to innovation, entrepreneurship, and career development.

4.3 Competency Requirements

(1) General competencies. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills; proficiently use computers for business tasks; possess strong foreign language reading, listening, speaking, writing, and translating abilities; possess critical thinking skills; able to master effective learning methods, actively engage in lifelong education and continuous learning, adapt to the rapidly developing field of insurance theory and practice, and keep up with the times.

(2) Professional competencies. Able to apply acquired professional knowledge flexibly in financial and insurance practice; able to discern, organize, and process various domestic and international financial and insurance information to provide strategic recommendations for governments, enterprises, financial and insurance institutions, and other relevant departments to solve practical problems. Proficient in applying professional theoretical knowledge and modern economic research methods to solve practical problems, possessing a certain level of scientific research ability.

(3) Innovation and entrepreneurship abilities. Possess an innovative spirit, entrepreneurial awareness, and innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities. Able to grasp the trends in the development of the financial and insurance industry, apply knowledge effectively, and creatively solve practical financial problems. Demonstrate professional sensitivity, daring to innovate, and being adept at innovation in the face of fierce market competition and international challenges.

(4) Career development and social abilities. Possess the ability to understand one's profession, gather information, make career choices, perform self-analysis, make career decisions, and design career development plans; able to formulate learning plans based on career development needs, possessing the ability to adapt to future career development demands; possess social cognitive abilities, inferring and judging others' psychological states, behavioral motivations, and intentions based on existing knowledge and experience. Possess social skills, interpersonal relationship skills, and the ability to handle social situations and adhere to moral standards for better social adaptation and harmonious coexistence

8 Practical Education Requirements

The practical education system includes modules such as military theory and training, laboratory (computer) experiments, internship (practical training), thesis (design) projects, and scientific research and innovation activities. These modules are distributed across the teaching process and extracurricular activities.

  1. Students must complete the practical education requirements of the UIBE and obtain the corresponding credits.

  2. The military and political training is arranged by the Armed Forces Department through activities such as military training and the study of military theory. Social surveys and other practical activities are organized and assessed by the Youth League Committee. Cognitive internships and on-the-job internships are arranged and assessed by the college.

  3. Students are required to complete a total of 10 credits of laboratory coursework as specified in the curriculum. This may include independently conducted experiments and in-class laboratory sessions.

  4. Under the guidance of teachers, students are required to complete their graduation thesis and pass the thesis defense.
