Associate Professor Qin Yu from the Dean's Chair of the National University of Singapore is here to give an academic report

At the noon of April 13, 2023, invited by the School of Insurance of UIBE, Qin Yu, an associate professor hired by the Dean of the Department of Real Estate of the School of Business of the National University of Singapore, shared an academic report entitled Haze and Crime: Evidence from Court Judgements in China at 501 of the Erudition building. The theme of this report is the causal relationship between air pollution and crime rates in developing countries. The report was hosted by Zheng Hao, an assistant professor of the Department of Risk Management and insurance. Insurance College, School of Economics and Trade and more than 60 other teachers and students from some other colleges and universities participated in the report on site or online.

During the reporting process, Professor Qin Yu analyzed the impact of short-term air pollution on the crime rate of different criminal behaviors. For the first time, he evaluated the causal relationship of the problem based on the context of a developing country and found that an increase in daily PM2.5 concentration would synchronously lead to an increase in the daily average crime rate of intentional harm. This study provides another way to discuss the social costs of environmental pollution, providing more motivation and policy significance for local governments to reduce air pollution. This study also analyzed the mechanism by which air pollution affects the occurrence of crime from a psychological perspective, and pointed out the importance of psychological intervention in reducing crime. In general, Qin Yu's research results are instructive for measuring the social cost of pollution and designing crime reduction policies. It is a cross study of environmental economics and sociology, with strong theoretical basis and practical significance.

During the sharing, the teachers and students present had an in-depth discussion with Qin Yu, so as to have a deeper understanding of the cutting-edge research results of environmental economics, and also understand the existing research margins and possible future research directions. Teachers and students who participated in this forum benefited a lot.
