The Prudential Reading Room of the School of Insurance and Economics was built in 1996. It was sponsored by the Prudential Investment, Loan, and Assurance Company. It was currently the newest and most inclusive center of insurance papers and information among the universities that offer insurance programs.
The books and other materials of the Prudential Reading Room can be divided into three categories: books purchased with the special fund of Prudential company; books donated by The Cigna Group and the Dutch insurer Nederlandsche Credietverzekering Maatschappij (NCM, merged by Atradius in 2001); books and materials for the Japan Actuaries Qualification Exams. There are 658 volumes of new books, 190 volumes of Chinese reference books, 633 volumes of Chinese books, 699 volumes of foreign books, 128 volumes of Chinese periodicals, 62 volumes of foreign periodicals, and 623 volumes of books before the Reading room, adding to a total number of 3215 volumes. The room covers an area of more than 60 square meters, with more than 60 seats. It is open for 15 hours a week. This reading room not only provides services for teachers of the SIE to teach and compile textbooks but also provides reading and borrowing services for students.
The Prudential Reading Room is a special feature of SIE and also a prerequisite to becoming a high-level Insurance School. With SIE developing into a top-ranking school of insurance economics, the Prudential Reading Room is also forging ahead to be a modern electronic library in the future.
