In 1951, the University of International Business and Economics offered a class named “International Cargo Insurance”, which created the characteristic of internationalization of the University. Even during the years when the insurance industry was banned by the government, UIBE had always been down-to-earth and strived to teach students to be top talents. In 1988, UIBE started the Insurance program. We integrate the strategy of making contributions to our Nation with the University’s philosophy and explore what we can do under the constantly changing global situation with the dream in our mind. In 2007, the School of Insurance and Economics was formally established. It not only casts a monument for the hard work of the older generation of insurance educators but also lays the foundation for the development of SIE on the new platform.

In terms of talent cultivating, we adhere to the fundamental task of educating people and cultivating them to be people of virtue. Bearing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as our most important mission, we integrate both Chinese characteristics and international characteristics based on Chinese culture, teach students to stay true to ideals and beliefs, strengthen their patriotism, and strive to cultivate modern, innovative, and practice-oriented elites with a global vision and perspective who can take on the task of national rejuvenation. To this end, we adhere to the integration of teaching and education, theory and practice, domestic and international integration, and disciplines, to build a systematic curriculum that “adapts to national needs, reflects professional characteristics, broadens knowledge structure, lays a solid professional foundation, focuses on practical training”, to promote the high-quality development of talent teaching and training. We strive to highlight characteristics of combining different disciplines, practical abilities, application of theoretical knowledge, and internationalization. Students of SIE have won over ten special prizes and first prizes every year in the Mathematical Contest In Modeling and other major competitions. We offer different programs, which include Risk Management and Insurance (National first-class discipline, National First-Class major), Actuarial Science (National First-Class discipline, National First-Class major, and Beijing Municipal First-Class major), Labor Economics and Social Security Studies (Beijing Municipal First-Class major) and an Experimental Class of Actuarial Science (National Plan for Cultivating Top Students in Basic Disciplines 2.0, National First-Class discipline, National First-Class major). We have an inclusive system of programs from undergraduate programs and master programs of secondary disciplines to Ph.D. programs of secondary disciplines and postdoctoral centers.

In the field of scientific research, we have accumulated much and made thorough preparations before making advances. We are not only dedicated to research on topics concerning important national issues but also committed to practices and explorations. We advocate innovation in theoretical academic research and we have made great achievements with nearly 100 papers published in international core journals in the past decade. These papers cover journals of all-levels from top to core disciplinary journals in the fields of economics, insurance, actuarial science, labor economics and social security, and health economics. More than 10 papers were published in national top journals. We have been trying to find the balance between the depth and range of research while never stopping moving forward. As more and more talents joined us, the range of research is expanding and the amount of research papers is gradually increasing as the result of interdisciplinary exchanges. We have combined Big data with the construction of liberal arts education, aiming for the development path of integration between disciplines. The research outcome and all-around talents serve the national strategy, economic industry and society.

As for social services, we focus on the one-of-a-kind problems of insurance and social security in developing countries with invigorating spirits. We have also been exploring insurance theories and practices with Chinese characteristics. We face up to the risks. And we will sacrifice whatever it takes to serve our country. We give suggestions for national development and put forward influential reports and policy recommendations. For risks and external environment, we continually analyze the situation, constantly adapt to new changes, seize new opportunities, and achieve innovative development through cross-integration between disciplines. The SIE has become an important institution in risk management and insurance, actuarial, social security, labor economics (health economics) theoretical application research as well as think tank services.

In terms of cultural inheritance and innovation, we have inherited and developed the School culture of “erudite, integrity, pioneering, and enterprising”. As a Chinese poet wrote in one of his poems, “We should take a more objective view towards the poems written by ancient people. For one question, we better ask different people for answers in order to get a comprehensive understanding.” While carrying forward the excellent traditional culture, the SIE tries to find the balance between the inheritance of classics and innovation, so as to promote our strengths and avoid our weaknesses and keep up with the times. The philosophy of SIE is love and responsibility. We will give love and bear our responsibilities forever.

The development of SIE over the past 30 years is also a microcosm of the development history of the insurance industry which has blazed a path from modest beginnings with a bright future. We build what we have now from scratch and will continually make unremitting endeavors. Professors and teachers always bear their missions in mind. We teach students both theoretical and practical knowledge, train them to be the best candidates for jobs, answer their questions and pass on our life lessons. No practice, no gain in one’s wit. We together with alumni will put our missions into action for the world and the people!

It is our hope that more and more people with interests in the insurance industry can join this family of love and responsibility. Together we can build the Great Wall in the insurance academia and industry with our commitment and enthusiasm.
